I was going to mention that Souness assault. I don't suppose too many will remember it but it was every bit as bad as the Ruddock one, ironically against the same team, that I mentioned earlier.
Souness was a vicious fucker and probably finished a lot of careers.
Talking of career ending assaults (I can't call them tackles), I'll never forget the gruesome lunge from chopper Harris that finished Johnny Ayris' short career. It was so bad that nowadays Harris would probably be sued for loss of earnings.

Nothing worse than a leg breaker. I was out on the wing one match and we had this mad Mackem playing for us, he was absolutely shit but a bit mad. He launched a two footed, off the ground tackle on this fella and caught the blokes shin and ankle at the same time.
I heard the snap from about 10 yards away, when I looked the blokes foot and ankle were at about 110 degrees to his leg, this was doubled with a compound fracture with a bone sticking out the front of his leg, one of the worse things I've ever witnessed. The game was called off and I'm sure the bloke would have never played again, but nor did the Mackem, put him off for life, fucking horrible.
Amazing how the adrenalin kicks in though, bloke was sitting talking about his chances of playing next week and having a fairly normal conversation whilst he waited for the ambulance.
